Weight-loss lies: it's a system, not willpower

Dietologist and longevity expert Leyla Zülfüqarova dismantles the weight-loss industry's biggest myths, why cutting calories backfires, why “slimming” teas, powders and injections are marketing, why the right bread beats no bread, and why weight is a whole-body signal, not a failure of willpower.

Women cut out bread, drink detox teas and live on 1200 calories, and the scale doesn't move. In this LaGrace Podcast, dietologist and longevity expert Leyla Zülfüqarova gives the uncomfortable answer: the problem usually isn't willpower, it's a system, hormones and a toxin load the diet industry would rather sell you a tea for.

It's a myth-busting, straight-talking conversation about calorie-counting, gluten, protein powders, the right kind of bread, why eating too little can make you gain, and why cellulite shows up even in very slim women, with the throughline that a healthy body is treated as a whole, not chased on a scale.

Key takeaways
01

Calorie-cutting is the biggest lie

Dropping to 500 or zero calories doesn't slim you, it surfaces serious problems and crashes your metabolism. If you can't lose on 1200 calories, that isn't weak willpower, it's a medical signal, often insulin resistance or an underactive thyroid.

02

“Slimming” products are marketing, not medicine

Slimming teas, coffees, capsules and injections, even “diabetic” cookies and market “health” snacks made with fructose (often worse than glucose), are business, not a cure. There is no magic wand.

03

Gluten-free isn't automatically healthier

Gluten is an amino acid, and cutting it only helps people with a tested sensitivity. Chasing gluten-free and plant milks for the “glamour” of it is a restriction, and a stress, you impose on yourself for no health reason.

04

Not no bread, the right bread

Real bread is heavy and fibrous, you can feel the grains. Soft white “starch” bread gives aroma but no benefit and spikes your sugar. One or two slices of proper bread a day is fine (if you have no gluten sensitivity).

05

Eating too little can make you gain

One meal a day, or skipping breakfast, drains the body's resources, crashes metabolism toward zero and flips it into storage mode, then one “wolf-hunger” binge piles it on. Gaining more than 5 kg is a signal something medical is off.

06

“Diet” means a way of life

The word is Greek for way of life, not a hunger sentence for looking slim. Where your lifestyle has mistakes, coffee timing, processed cheese, plastic-bottled water, and you don't replace them with better options, your “diet” is the mistake.

07

Treat the person, not the number

Toxin load, cortisol and estrogen metabolites, from plastics, cosmetics and chronic stress, block weight loss and even drive the cysts and fibroids so common here. Real detox is supporting the liver's phases, not drinking water all day.

08

Cellulite isn't only an overweight problem

It's a fat-tissue structure disorder, often worse in very slim women who lost collagen and tissue function through wrong dieting. It's treated from the inside, plus lymphatic-drainage massage, not by aggressively squeezing it away.

In practice
  • Don't self-prescribe any “slimming” product. Before any diet, get your own labs (thyroid, insulin), read against your individual normals, not a template check-up.
  • Choose real bread: heavy, whole-grain, with grains you can feel, one or two slices a day if you have no gluten sensitivity.
  • Cut the toxin load, not just calories: filtered water over plastic bottles, mind cosmetics and plastics (xenoestrogens), and lower chronic stress (cortisol).
  • Keep coffee to the first half of the day and in moderation, it can nudge metabolism, but heavy intake flushes magnesium and, if obesity is the real cause, makes it worse.
The word “diet”, from the Greek, means a way of life.
1200 calories isn't a lot, it's little. If you can't lose on it, it's a medical signal.
None of these have a magic wand.
Weight loss isn't a body problem, it's a system and a decision.
