Swelling, fat or cellulite: what do you see in the mirror?
Three different things get blamed as one — and each needs a different answer. How to tell water retention, fat and cellulite apart.

"I've gained weight" is the usual verdict a woman passes on herself in front of the mirror. But what the mirror shows is often not fat at all — it can be fluid the body is holding, or the texture of the tissue itself. The three look similar from the outside and need completely different responses, which is why guessing wrong wastes months.
Swelling: the fastest to appear, the fastest to go
Water retention changes your look within a day: the face is puffier in the morning, rings feel tight, the evening leaves sock marks on the ankles. It follows salty food, poor sleep, hormones, stress and long sitting. The tell-tale sign is speed — fat cannot appear overnight, fluid can. If your weight swings a kilogram or two between mornings, you are looking at water, not fat.
Fat: slow, even, and honest
Fat accumulates over weeks and months, not days. It is soft, even, and doesn't change from morning to evening. It responds to one thing only: a sustained shift in how you eat, move and sleep — a lifestyle, not a two-week punishment. And it deserves honesty in the other direction too: a healthy layer of fat is part of a woman's body, not an enemy to be eliminated.
Cellulite: texture, not volume
Cellulite is the dimpled, uneven surface — visible when you press the skin or sit down — created by the structure of the fat tissue and its connective bands. It exists in slim women and larger women alike, and neither dieting nor water balance removes it, because it is neither fat volume nor fluid. It answers to structural work: drainage, circulation, collagen support and consistent body rituals.
Why the diagnosis matters
A woman fighting water retention with a strict diet will starve and see nothing. A woman massaging pure fat accumulation will be disappointed too. The first step of any body programme in our practice is exactly this sorting — reading what the tissue is actually doing — and only then choosing the tools: lymphatic drainage for fluid, nutrition and movement for fat, structural ritual work for cellulite. Usually it is a combination, and usually the mirror has been showing all three at once.
